Katherine Griffis

KGriffis5.jpg - 124kb Our Interim Pastor, The Rev. Katherine Griffis, has served our congregation since February 1, 2009. Although she is now a Valley resident, Katherine considers Trinidad, Colorado, her headquarters, since her husband, Eric Griffis, is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad and the couple maintains a home there. Eric is a frequent visitor here, and Katherine gets back to Trinidad occasionally as well. Needless to say, their cell phones get a lot of use.

Before serving our congregation, Katherine was the installed pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Raton, New Mexico, for nine years. She and Eric enjoyed the opportunity of raising their two boys in a small town. Their older son, Matthew, is now living and working in the Seattle, Washington, area. Their younger son, Denis, is a sophomore at Carleton College in Minnesota. The boys are no strangers to Alamosa, having come to glean with La Puente in the past. This Christmas they saw another side to the Valley – from above – as they helped pick out and cut the family Christmas tree up in the mountains (with the proper permit, of course).

Katherine has a special interest in working with small congregations in changing times. She loves the enthusiasm and openness she finds at Alamosa Presbyterian KGnPR.jpg - 1,110kb Church and is excited about working with the Session and the congregation toward a vibrant future and the call of their next pastor. In her spare time she is working toward a second master’s degree, in conflict transformation with a focus on trauma healing. She also keeps busy locally as a volunteer hospital chaplain, county jail ministry visitor, knitter, and in making music with the San Luis Valley Symphony and the Valley Community Chorus. She’s having fun with music in our congregation also, especially our newly revitalized handbell choir.

“Alamosa is such a diverse community,” Katherine points out, with ranchers and farmers, college faculty and students, park service employees, railroaders, retirees, and a wealth of other local residents. She has gotten to know many of the people and programs in our community and looks forward to expanding her involvement. If she hasn’t yet gotten to know YOU, she hopes that will soon change!
